A concept calorie-control tool that helps you track weight and lose fat easily. It is made up of two components: One is a smart bag with sensors that detect the food nutrition. Another is a paired app that displays the results and tracks the weight.​

01. Brief

 

Product & Target Users
  • Product: Diet Bag is an IoT product made up of two parts: a smart shopping bag with sensors detecting nutrition fact; a paired mobile App features in data visualization and encouragement system.

  • Target Users: It target people who desire to lose weight via healthy dieting, but find self-control is hard.

  • Product Goal: To facilitates target users' modification during the dieting process, via encouragement system and peer community support. Eventually, it results in a healthy behavior change.

  • User Goal: To insist on dieting habits and finally lose weight.

02. Research

 

In order to deeply understand the problem space, I conducted 3 interviews with target users.

 

The questions were related to their eating habits, methods of losing weight, their struggles, and their core desire. 

These helped me to understand:

  • Peer pressure motivates people to keep in good shape. 

  • The goal is hard to achieve because self-control is hard. 

  • It is easy to get into a negative loop of over-eating, over-dieting, and over-working out.

  • People usually give up without seeing progress.

  • Multiple platforms lack the consistency of nutrition facts.

There is an opportunity to offer easy access to nutrition facts and encourage people when they make progress on weight loss.

04. Ideation: Brainstorming

 

In the brainstorming session, by using Cheatstorming, an innovative rapid idea generation technique developed at Carnegie Mellon University, I developed 30 diverse concept sheets around my opportunity statement.  

I refined ideas on potential product solutions to help customers insist on healthy diet and workout.​

 

Plan A:
AR Headset & Diet App

 

Plan B:
Smart Bag & Diet App

Due to the constraints of the AR headset, it is inconvenient to wear a heavy AR headset in the scenario of shopping in a mall. Moreover, the cost of the AR is expensive, this may get new users away from the high-end product in the first place.

 

Therefore, instead of creating a VR headset, I eventually chose Plan B, to create a Smart Bag and its paired Diet App for ordinrary users.​

05. Competitor Analysis

In order to compare the information architecture and user interface of the competitor Apps,

I took screenshots and did the competitor analysis (MyPlate, MyFitnessPal, Lose It!, 8fit).

To make my brand stand out from the competitors, I chose personalities for my brand: young, healthy, green, clean, and friendly.
